Chapter Thirteen

After a start like that, Jo thought, the interview could hardly get much worse and she was right. Her credibility had taken a severe dent in the eyes of the young man behind the desk, who had heard every word. When Jo questioned him about what had happened last night in the sauna, he didn’t divulge anything except to repeat that the doors to the cabins didn’t lock. His boss was not on duty so she had to give up.

‘Paul must be making his own enquiries about Antonia’s death,’ she said to Macy on their way back to the hotel.

‘Perhaps I’ll offer to do that for him,’ Macy said.

‘I know it would be your ideal to get paid twice for doing the same thing but I somehow think Paul’s faith in private investigators has been shaken slightly.’

‘You’re probably right.’ Macy sighed. ‘Let’s eat anyway. It’s so damn cold up here it’s making me hungry. Then I might go over to the police station to see if I can find out any more from them.’

‘I ought to talk to Sargent,’ Jo said. ‘Not that he’ll tell me exactly what he was doing last night, but at least I can try.’

She felt more up to the task after a sandwich. She found out from the hotel receptionist that the police were interviewing people in one of the conference suites and it seemed logical to assume that Sargent might be among them, so, after Macy had driven over to see if he could charm some information out of DCI Gammon, she walked over to the low building that was next door and identical to the one in which Antonia’s course had been held.

A group of about eight people were sitting waiting in a large dingy room, which had no windows and inappropriate-looking gilt-legged chairs set out cinema-style. No one spoke. A couple of people were staring at their phones and there was a waiting-room atmosphere. Jo wondered who to approach as Sargent clearly wasn’t there. One woman was conspicuous by being less conventionally dressed than the others in their sober business clothes. She was sitting with her arms folded over a couple of layers of bright sweaters. A long, crumpled skirt reached her socks and boots.

Jo sat down beside her. ‘Are you waiting to be interviewed?’

‘Yes. Isn’t it awful?’ She regarded Jo with a considering expression. ‘You’re a friend of hers, aren’t you? I’ve seen you at breakfast. I noticed you because I’m interested in auras and your friend had a very intense indigo aura.’

Jo had a friend who was a crystal healer and occasionally would venture an opinion on auras, so she wasn’t too taken aback by this. ‘I didn’t know. What does that mean?’

‘You only get it on people who feel things deeply — a sensitive soul. But with your friend, I got a distinct impression that her main feeling was fear—’ The other woman stopped, her wide brown eyes regarding Jo seriously. ‘I’m sorry. I’m being thoughtless. You must be extremely upset.
